Move to provide free sanitary products for those experiencing ‘period poverty’
19/12/2023
The Labour motion received cross-party support
Action to provide free sanitary products for women facing ‘period poverty’ in the Cherwell District will be investigated, after a motion at Cherwell District Council received unanimous support.
The motion was proposed at last night’s full council meeting by Labour Councillor Rebecca Biegel. It asked the council’s Executive to investigate and report back on the number of accessible locations across the Council’s estate where free sanitary products can feasibly and sensitively be provided.
In proposing her motion Councillor Biegel told the meeting that as the cost-of-living crisis continued, with many struggling to feed their families and heat their homes, the cost of essential sanitary products for women and girls provided an extra burden.
She said: “A poll by Action Aid in May 2023 showed that more than 21% of women and people who menstruate in the UK are experiencing period poverty. That is one in five who can’t afford suitable period products. Furthermore, the percentage of those affected by period poverty has risen from 12% to 21% in just one year.”
The motion received unanimous cross-party support.
