Puritans exit FA Cup

Team’s attention will now turn to promotion hopes

Banbury United have exited the FA Cup in the first round at the hands of league two side Barrow AFC.   The Puritans lost 0-4 in a game where the final score did not reflect the very credible part Banbury played in the match.

Banbury appeared nervous at the start of the game with Barrow taking the lead seven minutes into the first half thanks to a Josh Gordon goal.   However the Puritan’s performance grew in stature and they withheld any further progress by the northerners, leaving the score 0-1 at half time.

In the second half goalkeeper Ben Taylor held back the visitors from increasing their goal tally, but minutes later confusion in the goal mouth led to Barrow’s second.

Subsequently Taylor brought down Zanzala in the box and Barrow’s captain Banks added a third to the visitors score sheet.

As Banbury began to look like the game was taking its toll they left themselves open at the back and Barrow took advantage to take the final score line to 0-4.

Speaking to ITV Sport after the game Manager Andy Whing felt the final score line was a very harsh reflection of the game.   He said: “I think the second goal was the killer – it was a mistake between the goalkeeper and the centre half.

“We were a little bit nervous after they scored, then after half an hour we were in the ascendancy.

“The second half we started really well, but then that second goal was a bit of a sucker punch.   It’s not a 4 nil though.”

Mr Whing noted the team’s attention will now turn to the prospect of promotion.   He said: “Let’s go and win the league.   That’s going to be our aim”.

Today’s result brings to an end the Puritan’s run of 19 unbeaten games and sees the Club exit the FA Cup in the first round for the second year running.

For those not lucky enough to be at Station Approach to watch the game, ITV’s live coverage guaranteed a large audience to watch the match unfold.

Banbury’s MP Victoria Prentis was amongst those with tickets for the game.   Afterwards she said: “Well done Banbury United FC.   Not the result we were hoping for but wonderful to see so many supporters turn out.”
