Police investigate affray during Brackley v Banbury local derby game

The New Year’s Day fixture was held at St James Park
The New Year’s Day derby game between Brackley Town and Banbury United was disrupted yesterday lunchtime due to crowd disorder in the away fans area. The game was held at St James Park.
The game was paused as a small number of spectators breeched security fencing and engaged in violent behaviour as they tried to force a way through to confront home supporters. Northamptonshire Police are investigating the situation.
After the game Banbury United’s board of directors issued a statement condemning what had happened.
It said: “The Club would like to make it absolutely clear that we abhor violence in all its forms, whether home or away, and will be taking strong action in relation to these incidents.
“We will be conducting a thorough investigation and pursuing stadium bans for all involved. We appeal to any fans who witnessed the incidents to please come forward and help us to identify any perpetrators.”
A spokesperson for Northamptonshire Police told Banbury FM: “We have recorded an incident of affray in relation to the disorder that took place during the match yesterday between Brackley Town and Banbury United, at the Brackley Town ground in Churchill Way.
“Officers are working with the club to identify those responsible, and anyone with information about what happened is asked to call Northamptonshire Police on 101 regarding incident number 24000001255.”
