Small amount of DIY waste can now be disposed of without charge
03/01/2024
You must register online for the free service before heading to the Waste and Recycling centre
People in Oxfordshire can now dispose of a small amount of DIY waste for free, following a change in government legislation.
Currently those visiting the Alkerton Waste and Recycling centre have to pay for items such as baths, toilets, bags of rubble or tiles.
The new system will allow five standard DIY items to be disposed of free of charge once every seven days. However, those taking advantage of the offer will need to book online in advance.
For those turning up with more than five items of DIY waste the cheapest five will be counted towards the free allowance.
A plasterboard sheet uses up the week’s entire allowance.
The booking system was launched by Oxfordshire County Council yesterday following the change in government legislation, which came into force last week.
Councillor Pete Sudbury, Oxfordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Climate Change and Environment, said: “We hope people will quickly get used to this new way of doing things and find it a convenient way of disposing of their free allocation of DIY waste. By ensuring that people book in advance, we can make sure the system is not abused and the costs to our council taxpayers are minimised.
“The change in legislation is aimed at small amounts of DIY waste produced by a householder as part of home improvements they are carrying out themselves.”
Online bookings for free DIY waste only are for a single visit and Oxfordshire residents will need to register their address, vehicle registration number, email address, and the date they wish to visit, along with specifying the will be visiting Alkerton, or one of the county council’s other sites.
An email confirmation of the booking must be shown to site team on arrival.
Booking is only required for the free allocation of DIY waste. For any other chargeable DIY waste, or other household waste, people can just turn up as they currently do.
