Raw sewage from storm drains likely to be in flood water
04/01/2024
The majority of Thames Water storm drains in our area have been operating
The severe wet weather has resulted in storm drains being open at all but 5 of the Thames Water sewage treatment works in the Banbury FM area.
Live data on Thursday lunchtime showed raw sewage being pumped directly into local rivers and streams at 11 sites, with a further 10 having been operating in the last 48 hours. Data from a further three sites is shown as not currently available.
Raw sewage from the storm drains will be within the flood waters where rivers have burst their banks.
In Banbury the Thames Water site on the Thorpe Way Industrial Estate has been operating continually since December 30.
In Bloxham, what has historically been one of our area’s worst performing storm drains has been open continually for over 100 hours.
Last September work to upgrade the Bloxham Sewage Treatment Works was completed at a cost of more than £6 million. At the time Thames Water said: “This work will provide a major increase in treatment capacity, from 30.6 to 38 litres per second. This will reduce the need for untreated discharges in wet weather.”
