Proposals for road layout improvements around Banbury station revealed
17/11/2021
Scheme would improve connectivity from southern side of town and result in improved air quality on Bridge Street
Proposals to improve the road layout around Banbury station have been published. The plans aim to shorten journey times for buses, taxis, pedestrians and cyclists, and improve the connectivity between the southern side of Banbury and Banbury town centre. There should also be a reduction in congestion on Bridge Street, resulting in improved air quality.
Under the plans access for vehicles to the old (eastern) station car park, Station Approach businesses and Banbury United FC would move to being via a road from Tramway. Traffic from Bridge Street would not be allowed any further than the train station, although taxis and buses would be able to pass through a controlled area to gain access to the industrial estate and Tramway.
Oxfordshire County Council has launched a consultation to gather views on the proposals.
The plans would include new bus stops at the station and an additional car passenger drop off and collection facility on Tramway Road. Access to the old station car park from the south of the town would be improved as part of the project.
Those walking, cycling or using a bus or taxi would benefit from the connection between Bridge Street and Tramway Road via Banbury Station, although other vehicles would not be allowed to use this route.
Councillor Duncan Enright, Oxfordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Travel and Development Strategy, said: “Banbury residents rightly demand better ways to get around on foot, by bike or scooter, or on buses and taxis.
“We all want to see the train station better used and improved. An improved link between Banbury’s great town centre to the railway station will provide a platform for regeneration of Oxfordshire’s largest town.
“The proposed works will make buses link better with trains, as well as improving access for pedestrians and cyclists. The Tramway Road improvements will mean better bus connectivity from the south of Banbury to the town centre and make it easier for Banbury residents to make walking, cycling, catching a bus, getting a taxi, or taking a train part of their daily routine.”
The improvement work is part of the wider regeneration of Banbury and has been designed to support the Cherwell Local Plan , Banbury Vision and Masterplan SPD, Local Transport Plan, and the emerging Oxfordshire Plan 2050.
The county council held a public consultation in early 2020 to gather initial feedback on the scheme and the revised proposals have been prepared following that.
Following the current consultation and subject to planning, construction is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2022.
The consultation on the proposals can be found here and closes on December 14.

So this just moves the congestion from one side of town to another . Hightown road is already rammed at peak times . I presume traffic lights will have to be put in otherwise you will not be able to get out of tramway
