Major fire at Grundon site on Thorpe Way
02/12/2021
Fire crews will be on site for most of today
Fire crews have worked through the night to deal with a major fire at the Grundon waste disposal site on Thorpe Way in Banbury. The blaze started just before 7pm last night.
Seven fire crews from Banbury , Deddington, Hook Norton, Charlbury, Bicester, Gaydon and Southam were joined by the command unit from Slade Park at the scene. The fire involved around one hundred tonnes of waste within a sorting warehouse.
The Grundon facility is based on Thorpe Mead off Thorpe Way but the fire was clearly visible from Bankside. Whilst there was no risk to the wider public anyone concerned about smoke or the smell was advised to keep their doors and windows closed.
The crews who had initially been at the scene were supported and relieved through the night by other crews from stations at Chipping Norton, Rewley Road Fire Station in Oxford , Bicester, Abingdon ,Wheatley, Witney Fire Station, Burford Fire Station and Woodstock. Teams moved waste to outside of the building to extinguish it.
Whilst the fire is well contained, crews will continue on site for most of the day. They say that due to on site measures there is no wider risk.
