Local wellbeing initiatives to stay healthy in 2024
16/01/2024
Specific resources are available for people with long-term health conditions and families of children who get free school meals
We’re being reminded that a number of local wellbeing initiatives are available to us to support any healthy New Year’s resolutions we may be trying to keep.
Cherwell District Council offers activity programmes such as Move Together and You Move and has wayfinding and mapping projects to help us explore and enjoy the local area.
The Move Together scheme provides tailored exercise programmes for those living with long-term health conditions. Currently over 1,800 people are signed-up and last year 73 per cent said that they had increased their activity levels, with most reporting improvements in their mobility and mental health.
You Move allows children who get free school meals and their parents to enjoy the benefits of physical activity together. The scheme offers half-price leisure centre discounts and money off for local families on climbing, soft play, martial arts and cricket. Free sessions are also provided by the council’s own Youth Activators.
Users of council owned Spiceball Leisure Centre can take advantage of state-of-the-art gym equipment which was installed during December.
Councillor Phil Chapman, Portfolio Holder for Healthy and Safe Communities, said: “There are countless useful resources to support anyone who would like to increase their activity levels by exploring the district on foot. People can access fantastic maps in the Go Jauntly app, follow physically signed health routes, or join a daily Ramblers’ health walk at locations across the district.
“You could also book one of the floodlit pitches in the district for a friendly game of five-a-side or check out one of the many inclusive exercise classes on offer through our partners, be it yoga, aerobics, or dance.”
