Wykham Park Academy closes due to water leak

Engineers are on site repairing the fault and it is hoped the school can reopen tomorrow

Parents of pupils at the Wykham Park Academy saw their youngsters returning home earlier than expected today after a burst water main forced the school to close.   Just after 9.30am parents received a message from Principal Sylvia Thomas to let them know.

The leak meant school toilets were not available for use and there was an absence of drinking water.

Engineers from Thames Water attended the site and located the burst by the entrance gate. An estimated time for completion of the repair will only be available when they have managed to dig down to expose the damaged pipe.

A spokesperson for Thames Water told Banbury FM: “We’re sorry to anyone who has been disrupted by a burst on a six inch-diameter water pipe in Banbury. Our engineers were quickly on the scene and managed to stop the flow of water. Work is now ongoing on a repair.”

Whilst it is hoped the school will be able to reopen tomorrow, an update being sent to parents later today.

A spokesperson for Aspirations Academies Trust, which runs the Wykham Park Academy, said: “Online learning has resumed for all Wykham Park Academy students today due to a burst water pipe at the school this morning. All teaching staff are also working from home.

“The leak has resulted in school toilets currently not being available for use and the absence of drinking water.

“Cold weather and old water pipes are believed to be behind the cause of the leak which has now been stopped by Thames Water engineers who are on site. Investigations and repairs are ongoing.

“There will be an update later today for staff and students on when the school will reopen – we are hopeful it will be tomorrow.”
