Second water main burst causes more disruption for school

Students from years 7, 8, 9, 10 and 12 at Wykham Park Academy are home learning again today

Parents of students in five year groups at Wykham Park Academy are facing another day of home schooling after a second burst in a six inch-diameter water main forced the school to partially close for a second day.   The news was broken to parents and carers first thing this morning.

The school is still open for year groups 11 and 13.   Other year groups are undertaking home learning.

On Wednesday the Academy was forced to close completely whilst engineers from Thames Water dealt with a burst pipe by the school’s entrance.

It had been hoped the school would reopen today with engineers having worked through the night to fix the problem.  However, this morning a further burst resulted in a full reopening not being possible.

Thames Water have told Banbury FM they are initially working to maintain water supplies in the area before starting the necessary repair.

A spokesperson for Aspirations Academies Trust, which runs Wykham Park Academy, said: “Wykham Park Academy was due to open as usual this morning. However, there was another fracture in the pipe during the early hours of this morning.

“Thames Water engineers are back on site and the school is only open today for Years 11 and 13.

“Online learning has resumed for a second day for all other year groups.

“All parents or guardians were notified this morning via email and text. We apologise for the inconvenience caused. Thames Water has assured us engineers are working as quickly as they can to repair the leak.”

A spokesperson for Thames Water said: “We’re sorry the school has been unable to open and appreciate this is very disruptive for staff, pupils and parents.

“There have been two bursts on a six inch-diameter water pipe and our engineers are working hard to maintain water supplies in the area before starting repairs. We’ll work as fast as we can to get everything back to normal as soon as possible.”

The problem is also affecting other surrounding properties including the residents of Stanbridge House.
