Chacombe Church’s flipping good fundraiser
14/02/2024
Young and old came together to enjoy freshly cooked pancakes
Shrove Tuesday was marked in Chacombe with villagers heading to St Peter and St Paul’s church to enjoy eating pancakes whilst raising money for the grade one listed building.
Young and old came together for the event and enjoyed a range of toppings, with some selecting the traditional choice of lemon and sugar, whilst chocolate spread and golden syrup were popular options with some of the children present.
This is the fourth time the church has held the event with over 55 pancakes freshly cooked and served.
Money raised at the event will go towards the repair bill for the church’s south facing wall, where repairs are needed due to subsidence. Engineers are due to inspect the wall this coming week, but previously an amount in excess for £40,000 had been estimated.
Shrove Tuesday was a day when traditionally people used up any remaining indulgent foods before the 40 days of the Christian festival of Lent began, when they would observe a period of fasting. Cooking pancakes was a chance to use up whatever they had left.
