A number of shop-lifters were caught and “a prolific thief” arrested

A weekend of action to tackle retail crime in Banbury has resulted in a number of people being caught shoplifting.

Banbury Neighbourhood Policing Team were actively monitoring the town centre and retail parks.    Their aim was to deter or convict offenders and provide visible reassurance to retail staff.

A 40-year-old female and 42-year-old male were caught stealing items from one local business.   The items were recovered and both now face a police interview and potential further action.

Another person was spotted removing the security tags from items ready to steal them.   They fled the scene when spotted by a Police Community Support Officer.

At Banbury Gateway a 35-year-old male was caught stealing from Marks & Spencer.   He was issued with an out of court disposal for the offence and the property returned to the shop.

Elsewhere a 43-year-old woman who had failed to appear at court for shoplifting offences was remanded ahead of appearing at the next available court and a 53-year-old man, described by police as “a prolific thief”, was arrested, charged and remanded.

It is despicable behaviour, disgusting how people are behaving in this town . Police needs to be more about and force companies to hire a security guard I work in one of retail shops by big Tesco’s and we have so many thief’s every day that is unacceptable and they get away with it because as staff we are not allowed to do anything about it apart from reporting it to manager and still it does nothing because companies can’t be bothered to spend money on security to avoid money and stock loss and security of staff that works and deals with abuse of thiefs
