Flood defences working but Banbury still under water in places

Spiceball Park and Banbury United’s pitch are once again under water
After another very wet day on Thursday two flood alerts are in place in the Banbury FM area today.
Pictures taken above the town by David Feeley from Banburyshire360 show the huge volume of water being held back by Banbury’s flood defences, but still low-lying areas beyond the flood gates are submerged.
A warning for the River Cherwell earlier predicted that the high river levels would continue to rise further, before stabilising through the day.
The river has again broken its banks in Banbury town centre behind Lidl and has left much of Spiceball Park under water. That has led to the cancellation of Saturday’s Parkrun.
Banbury United’s home game on Saturday has been called off with large sections of the pitch underwater.
In Cropredy a number of the fields used for the Cropredy festival are submerged with earlier reports that the Williamscott Road had been flooded.
A separate flood alert is in force for the River Great Ouse from Brackley. Here levels are dropping but still remain high with flooding possible.
The Environment Agency advise people to take care on riverside roads and footpaths and not to put themselves in unnecessary danger.
