As well as the upgrade, activities to encourage participation are being introduced

A partnership between Banbury Town Council and the Lawn Tennis Association will see a £10,000 investment to rejuvenate the tennis courts at People’s Park.

The courts will be fully cleaned and repainted and a new gate access system installed, which will be linked to the online booking system.

The courts will remain free to play on and as part of the project the Town Council will work the Lawn Tennis Association to introduce a variety of activities, including sessions where tennis equipment will be provided for players.

Work is due to begin this spring and, subject to the weather, scheduled for late April.

Work in Banbury is part of a £30million investment across the country by the Government and the Lawn Tennis Association Tennis Foundation.   Over 1,500 courts have been brought up to standard through the project so far.

Councillor Kieron Mallon, Leader of the Council, said: ” Our goal is affordable, accessible public sports facilities, providing opportunities for residents to explore activities they love.   This aligns with Banbury Town Council’s commitment to establishing functional public spaces.   Our dedication to making tennis accessible to all residents, regardless of age or experience, is showcased through these upcoming improvements.”

Julie Porter, Chief Operating Officer at the Lawn Tennis Association, said: “This investment is part of the UK Government and LTA’s Parks Tennis Project, and will mean that courts will be available for people to use for years to come.    We will also be working closely with Banbury Town Council to ensure that the local community have a range of accessible opportunities to get on court, and open up our sport to many more people.”
