Extra £3.6m funding approved for Tramway improvements
19/03/2024
The total cost of the project is now £10.497m
Oxfordshire County Council’s Cabinet has approved an increase in the budget for work to upgrade access to Banbury train station from Tramway.
An extra £3.6m has been rubber stamped, taking the total costs for the Tramway Road Accessibility Improvement scheme to £10.497m.
The extra cash will cover additional costs due to a change in the scheme’s design and suggestions from the Road Safety Audit.
The project aims to encourage the use of public transport and improve pedestrian and cycling routes for railway station users. Access for vehicles to the station’s west side car park and Station Approach will change to being via Tramway, which its hoped will reduce traffic and waiting times on Cherwell Street and at the Bridge Street junction.
The redesigned scheme would allow buses, taxis and cyclists to use the upgraded road between Bridge Street and Swann Close Road, with a bus stop at the station. This route would not be open to cars.
Following a full public consultation, work on the final design was due to be completed in February, with construction scheduled for this year.
The extra cash for the project will be funded through the reallocation of Growth Deal funds. This is a £215m fund from the government in return for the county’s councils agreeing to build 100,000 new homes between 2011 and 2031.
