Programme to check lung health running at the Horton

Its hope the programme will help detect and treat lung conditions earlier
A national programme to check on the health of current and former smokers’ lungs has begun in Banbury. The Targeted Lung Health Check initiative will eventually be rolled out to other parts of Oxfordshire.
People aged 55 to 74 who smoke, or who have ever smoked, will be invited to complete an electronic questionnaire about their smoking history.
Depending on the results, they will then be offered a phone call with a specially-trained health care professional to discuss their risk factors for lung conditions.
If the assessment finds the person needs further tests, they will be offered a low dose CT scan of their lungs at the Horton General Hospital for further investigation, with any treatment needed then put in place.
Its hope the programme will help detect and treat lung conditions earlier.
Sara Randall, Chief Operating Officer at OUH, said: “Early diagnosis is a key part of treating lung conditions, and this programme is designed to check those most at risk of developing lung illnesses earlier, when they’re much more treatable and outcomes are better.
“We’re urging anyone who is contacted by the service to take part in the assessment – it doesn’t take long, and any subsequent checks are quick and painless.”
