Popular Councillor hopes to inspire other working people to aim to be mayor

Mark Cherry is Banbury’s new Town Mayor.

Councillor Cherry was appointed during an Inauguration Ceremony in a packed Town Hall on Tuesday evening.

After taking the chains of office he spoke of his pride at representing the town where he had lived all of his life.

Councillor Cherry said: “Its a great honour.    I hope I’ll be a great ambassador for Banbury.”

During the year Councillor Cherry is hoping to support a number of local charities.   He said: “One of them will be Katharine House because my mum passed away in the Hospice.    There’s also Home Start and I do a lot of work with the Sunshine Centre.   There’s plenty to choose from!”

In proposing Councillor Cherry for the role, Councillor Matt Hogdson noted how proud Mark’s mother would have been and highlighted he was stepping into the shoes of someone Councillor Cherry had looked up to – the former mayor and Banbury hero George Parish.

Councillor Cherry is himself hoping to inspire others.   He said: “I want to encourage more working people to be mayors in the future.”

During the year Councillor Cherry’s consort will be Councillor Helen Mears.   Councillor Keiron Mallon was appointed Deputy Mayor.

Earlier in the evening outgoing Mayor Fiaz Ahmed was praised for the conscientious and zealous manner in which he had completed his duties.   Cheques for £750 were presented to Katharine House and Dogs For Good from the money raised at official fund raising events during the year.
