Theatre group to perform a play at Banbury’s outdoor swimming pool
04/04/2022
Around 50 young people are set to join the Easter holidays project
Cherwell Theatre Company are planning a theatrical experience in an unusual location – Woodgreen Leisure Centre’s Open Air Swimming Pool.
The company deliver community-based performance projects with young people. For this production they are collaborating with Hill View School choir to stage a production over the Easter holidays. Around 50 young people are expected to take part.
Rehearsals for the Play In A Week project start next Monday at Banbury and Bicester College, with the cast learning Chris Bush’s “The Changing Room”. The play is set in and around a swimming pool and follows a group of young people full of excitement, impatience, and uncertainty – they know change is coming, but not what it will look like.
Cherwell Theatre Company originally planned to stage the play in April 2020. Artistic Director Tristan Jackson-Pate said: “The pandemic put the production on hold for a time, but CTC were still able to deliver outreach workshops themed around transition in local primary schools online.
“It felt important to speak to year 6s in the first lockdown and to help them explore their feelings towards moving up to secondary school at such an unpredictable and stressful time”.
Emily Casewell, a Year 6 Teacher at Hill View Primary School said: “We’re thrilled to be working with Cherwell Theatre Company again.
“We’ve enjoyed having them visit to perform in our green spaces over the last couple of years and this project gives our choir the opportunity to sing in public for the first time in a long time.”
Other young people aged 10 or above are invited to join the cast with opportunities to act in the show, or take on a back-stage theatre role.
Performances will be during the afternoon on Saturday 16 April at Woodgreen Leisure Centre. It’s free to attend, but tickets must be booked in advance.
