Financial reasons have been cited for the closure

A well known village hotel has permanently closed.   Signs appeared at the entrance to the Cartwright Hotel in Aynho on Tuesday noting a temporary closure, but it has been confirmed to Banbury FM the closure is permanent.

Terry Gilboy from the hotel said: “I can confirm The Cartwright Hotel has closed down on a permanent basis due to financial reasons.

“We’d like to thank the local community for all their support over the years.”

The hotel comprised 21 en suite bedrooms, a restaurant, bar and function room.

The Cartwright Hotel was originally a 16th century coaching inn called the Red Lion.   The Cartwright family bought the village in 1615 and took control of the pub.   In the first half of the 1800s the inn was renamed as The Cartwright Arms.   Beer was brewed in the pub until 1917.

After becoming rundown in the 1990s, new owners renovated the building and it reopened as the Cartwright Hotel in 2008.

Shame, was a lovely friendly hotel with a terrific restaurant.
Was hoping to go back again next month.
