Go wild in June

Around our area are numerous nature trails, green spaces and health routes

We’re being encouraged to embrace the great outdoors during June.

The annual Berkshire, Buckinghamshire & Oxfordshire Wildlife Trust “30 Days Wild” challenge is underway – inviting us to connect with nature every day through the month.

This year Cherwell District Council is supporting the campaign.

People of all ages and abilities can join in and the Trust are offering free herb seeds and an inspirational guide to anyone who signs up.

Locally there are numerous nature trails, green spaces, health routes and community groups which offer a chance to discover the joy of connecting with nature.

Councillor Rob Pattenden, Portfolio Holder for Healthy Communities, said: “Cherwell is the perfect place to carry out some random acts of wildness across June. From learning some hands-on skills at community gardens to observing our furry and feathered friends in their habitats, there is a lot to enjoy – with many activities being free.

“For those that are passionate about getting out and exploring, we have a number of walking trails across the district. In our urban centres, we have colourful and fun trails in Kidlington, Banbury and Bicester. For people looking to go off the beaten path, we have circular routes covering stunning villages and rural locations in Cherwell.

“We also have a number of wonderful community groups in Cherwell with links to the natural environment, including gardens, mental health charities, eco organisations and healthy place shaping, that have plenty of activities on offer.”

This year is the tenth year the Trust has run the 30 Days Wild challenge.

Estelle Bailey, Chief Executive of BBOWT, said: “While our first year of running 30 Days Wild saw just over five hundred people sign up across our three counties, last year more than four thousand took on the challenge, which is brilliant.

“This momentum comes as no great surprise – connecting with nature is so important for our sanity and general wellbeing. My top tips to enjoy 30 Days Wild: Sit, walk, run, lay on the grass, look up, look down, fix on something, don’t be afraid to touch or smell it.  Smile at the sun, throw your arms out in the rain, get wet, walk barefoot on grass and bare earth, have a cuddle with a tree – be in the moment.”

Cherwell District Council has activities and information available on its website and full details of the 30 Days Wild challenge can be found here.
