St Leonard’s pupils create bee hotels for community garden

The creations will offer much-needed sanctuary for pollinators
Young environmentalists from St Leonard’s Primary School have crafted seven bee hotels for the Bridge Street Community Garden in Banbury. Fourteen year 5 and 6 pupils used wood, bamboo canes, and other natural materials to create safe places for the insects.
The templates the children used were created by the mental health charity Restore.
The Community Garden sits alongside the canal, behind the properties on Bridge Street and flanked by Concorde Avenue. It is a cherished green space, cared for by volunteers from the Grimsbury area. A number of community groups look after the garden’s pollinator-friendly flowers and vegetables.
The pupil’s bee hotels will be placed in the garden’s planters, offering much-needed sanctuary for pollinators.
The project is part of a broader initiative, funded by Trust for Oxfordshire’s Environment, which has also supported the addition of new recycled plastic garden beds and a wildlife-friendly pond.
One of the children involved in creating the bee hotels was Amelie, who said: “I really enjoy doing this because I love wildlife, and I need to take care of it to keep having it.”
Faye added: “I love being here because wildlife and animals need homes, and I love nature.”
