13/08/2024
The Bake Off concluded a week celebrating the world-famous Banbury Cake
Polly Talbot Waller from Great Bourton has been named as the first winner of the Banbury Cake Bake Off.
The event on Saturday came at the conclusion of Banbury Cake Week, celebrating the world famous iconic, sweet, spiced flaky pastry treat. Local cafes, bars, and pubs showcased their own unique, mouth-watering twists on the secret Banbury Cake recipe.
Local yarn bombing group “All Things Woolly” joined in by adorning town centre post boxes, café tables and lampposts with colourful displays.
Judges sampling the tasty creations at the Bake Off included Oxfordshire’s Deputy Lord Lieutenant, Sir Tony Baldry, and John Donaldson, Chair of Banbury & District Twinning Association.
Sir Tony said: “[This is] absolutely fantastic, we hope next year will grow with entries and we hear that there are a range of desserts, dishes, and cocktails that will be on offer. It was difficult to pick a winner as all the entries were delicious.”
John Donaldson emphasised the importance of preserving Banbury’s traditions through events like Banbury Cake Week.
Winner Polly Talbot Waller was presented with a trophy and a voucher from Abraxas.
Banbury Cake Week was organised by Banbury BID.
