Request to use former chocolate shop for educational purposes

Thornton’s vacated the unit in 2021
A planning application has been submitted to Cherwell District Council to allow the former Thornton’s shop in the Castle Quay Shopping Centre to be used for educational purposes.
Kumon Educational have applied for the change of use from the current Class E, which covers activities such as shops and restaurants, to F1(a) Educational Support.
The Kumon Banbury Study Centre is run by Mehdi Mohajeri, offering maths and English study programmes for children. The Ofsted Registered centre currently operates from St Hughes Church on Ruskin Road.
Peter Monk from Banbury Civic Society has commented that the society is not adverse to commercial premises being converted to residential use, but are ambivalent about the loss of a shopping unit for non-commercial purposes.
Unit 60, the former Thornton’s shop, is one of a number of empty and unused units in Castle Quay.
