Families benefit from healthy eating on a budget scheme

A grant from Cherwell District Council has enabled a local charity to run a ‘healthy eating for families on a budget’ scheme.
Home-Start Banbury, Bicester and Chipping Norton received £1,400 which helped support twenty families in taking a healthier approach to meal times, whilst preparing meals in bulk to make food shopping more cost-effective.
The families were given a free slow cooker, recipe book and ingredients so they could learn more about healthy eating, meal preparation and trying new ingredients.
Home-Start volunteers guided them into how to use the slow cookers to create low-cost healthy meals, whilst improving their confidence and knowledge of ingredients and cooking techniques.
Fun was a vital ingredient, with children involved in cooking family meals.
Councillor Rob Pattenden, Portfolio Holder for Healthy Communities, said: “Being able to assist local charities and organisations through our community grants is something we pride ourselves on. We value the opportunity to work with those on the ground who are closely involved with our local communities, providing crucial projects to help develop healthy, resilient and engaged residents.”
Cherwell District Council created community food grants to support not-for-profit organisations in providing food for communities and developing activities involving cooking, growing or nutrition education.
