Planning application submitted for former Aynho hotel
02/09/2024
A number of buildings would be converted to residential homes but the pub would be retained
The owner of the Cartwright Hotel in Aynho has applied for planning permission to convert parts of the hotel into residential homes, but they are planning to retain the front of the building as a pub.
Oxfordshire Hotels Ltd closed the Cartwright Arms back in May, citing a significant reduction in bookings and public use of the bar and restaurant.
The planning application, which has been lodged with West Northamptonshire Council, seeks to retain the Cartwright Arms public house at the front, whilst converting the hotel’s courtyard buildings onto four self-contained residential units.
The applicant also wants to demolish a mid-1980s flat roof extension which was added to create a function room. This would be replaced with an original stone masonry side wall, reinstating its original appearance.
The hotel offered 21 letting rooms. Under the plans the Cartwright Arms Public House would retain 4 letting rooms.
A nearby resident supports the application, but requests that the existing pedestrian access between The Square and Butts Close through the courtyard area is retained.
The Cartwright Hotel was originally a 16th century coaching inn called the Red Lion. The Cartwright family bought the village in 1615 and took control of the pub. In the first half of the 1800s the inn was renamed as The Cartwright Arms. Beer was brewed in the pub until 1917.
After becoming rundown in the 1990s, Oxfordshire Hotels Ltd purchased and renovated the building and it reopened as the Cartwright Hotel in 2008.

Sorry. I think this is a silly idea. When it was run as a hotel \pub there wasn’t enough room for parking anyway. Now there will be even less . Living in the village there is very little parking for Aynho residents, let alone the parking for pub and hotel.
