Quality of planning decisions falls foul of national target
05/09/2024
Cherwell has had more major application planning appeals overturned than government set recommended maximums
Cherwell District Council has fallen foul of a national target for the quality of its planning decisions so far in 2024.
The quality threshold for major applications which are overturned at appeal is 10 percent. So far this year the Planning Inspector has overruled local decision makers in 13 out of 116 cases –equivalent to 11 percent.
The figures were included in a Planning Performance report which was considered by the Planning Committee on Thursday afternoon. An officer told councillors the matter was “cause for concern”.
The report notes that the council is within the limits on determining planning applications in time, although it is at the bottom of the list in comparison to the authorities Cherwell shares a border with. The percentage of applications determined without the need for extensions of time is significantly better than some of the other authorities.
Last week we told you that the cost of defending planning decisions where the applicant has appealed to the Planning Inspector has reached £327,000 in the Cherwell District so far this financial year. The amount is three times the £100,000 set aside in Cherwell District Council’s budget.
