Local voting on Winter Fuel payments
11/09/2024
The government convincingly defeated opposition moves to derail their plans
Banbury’s Labour MP voted with the government yesterday, rejecting an opposition motion to abandon plans to cut Winter Fuel payments for all pensioners, apart from those on pension credits.
Sean Woodcock had previously stated that the move “was a tough choice but a necessary one”. He blamed a black hole in the country’s finances, saying: “The previous government made commitment after commitment without knowing where the money was going to come from, and without action the scale of the inheritance they have left us would have threatened our economic stability.”
Elsewhere in Oxfordshire the county’s Liberal Democrat MPs supported the opposition motion, voting against the Government’s plans.
In a joint statement Layla Moran, Olly Glover, Freddie Van Mierlo, Charlie Maynard & Calum Miller said: “Thousands of pensioners across our communities will be left deeply worried about how they will get by this winter with this cut to the Winter Fuel Payment.
“So many pensioners are already facing another winter of a cost of living crisis and this will make things worse.
“The damage left by the Conservatives to our economy is unforgivable but cutting payments to vulnerable pensioners across Oxfordshire is no way to bring about the change the country deserves.
“We proudly opposed the Government today and stood up for the many pensioners in Oxfordshire who are now at risk of an even bigger winter cost of living crisis.”
Labour won the vote convincingly with 335 of their MPs supporting the government position. 213 MPs from other parties voted against removing Winter Fuel payments for pensioners.
