Fireworks

The best option is to attend a professionally organised public event

Over the next few days lovers of fireworks have a number of organised displays to enjoy around the area.   Ahead of that Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue is reminding us of the ways to enjoy the occasion and stay safe.  They say this is best achieved by attending a professionally organised public event.

Deb Forder, Community Safety Manager from Oxfordshire County Council’s Fire and Rescue Service, said: “Organised fireworks displays are cheaper and far safer than hosting your own fireworks or bonfire party.

“However, if you are planning on using fireworks for a private event on 5 November, or at other community gatherings, it’s key to check out the firework safety and UK law around their use. You can check out the British Fireworks Association’s dedicated website for this.”

For those planning their own fireworks party tips include only buying CE marked fireworks from reputable and licensed shops.   Fireworks should be kept in a closed, metal box and lit at arm’s length with a taper.   If a firework doesn’t go off it shouldn’t be returned to.

We should also think about the dangers from bonfires – the advice is to make sure this is at least 18 metres away from houses, trees and hedges.   It should be surrounded by a barrier to keep spectators five metres away with buckets of water close by to damp down if needed.

The Fire and Rescue Service do not recommend the use of sky lanterns because of the fire risk they pose.
