First snow of the season causes disruption

19/11/2024

Schools, public transport and roads were all affected

Overnight snow has caused problems around our area this morning.

Local roads hadn’t been treated and drivers had to contend with slippery conditions, with reports of vehicles struggling on Bretch Hill and delays on many routes through the rush hour.

Warwickshire Police closed the A422 at Sun Rising Hill, citing the road as “unsafe”.

Oxfordshire County Council announced their gritting teams were out treating roads just after 7am.

A number of schools were forced to stay shut including Frank Wise and William Morris, Longford Park, Cherry Fields and The Grange primary schools.   Wroxton Primary School also stayed closed but advised parents their children could be taken to St Marys School in Banbury, which itself opened at 10am, as did Bishop Loveday and Hornton primary schools.

Stagecoach buses cancelled all their breakfast services in Banbury and some of the surrounding villages.

Cherwell District Council said their refuse and recycling teams were out as usual, but operating more slowly due to the conditions.   Anyone who’s Tuesday collection is missed today should leave their bins out until tomorrow when collectors would be back.
