Banbury’s bus users to benefit from investment and December special offer
22/11/2024
A service overhaul begins and Sunday journeys in December capped at £1
Banbury’s bus users are set to benefit from government cash to enhance popular routes and protect rural services and a county council initiative to offer single fares capped at £1 every Sunday in December.
Funding totalling £10m is heading to Oxfordshire as the government seeks to deliver London-style bus services to every corner of the country. As part of an overhaul, public control of buses is being introduced by removing barriers to bus franchising and public ownership.
Sean Woodcock, Banbury’s MP, said: “I am delighted that the Transport Secretary has confirmed £10m of new bus funding across Oxfordshire including my constituency.
“People across Banbury are tired of unreliable, infrequent bus services holding them back from opportunities after a decade of neglect of our local bus services.
“This new Government has a plan to deliver better buses across the country, and this funding boost is another crucial stop on that journey.”
Meanwhile, bus users can take advantage of capped single bus fares of just £1 every Sunday in December.
A similar offer in 2023 led to an estimated 7.4 per cent increase in bus journeys.
Councillor Andrew Gant, Oxfordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Transport Management, said: “This measure proved popular last year, with more people using the bus as a result. So, we are delighted to be able to not just repeat it, but to expand it by including the Sunday after Christmas too.”
Chris Hanson, Managing Director of Stagecoach, said: “We are pleased to once again support this initiative, offering £1 bus fares on Sundays throughout December, in Oxfordshire.
“This scheme not only makes festive travel more affordable but also encourages sustainable transport options during a busy time of year. We look forward to welcoming more passengers on board and helping everyone to enjoy the festive season with ease and convenience.”
The December fare cap is one of the measures funded by a £1.9 million government grant in 2023 to improve bus services over two years.
