Man in hospital after being hit by pursued van

A van which was suspected of containing cannabis plants was involved in a collision with a pedestrian as it tried to evade police in Banbury on Wednesday evening.   The pedestrian has been hospitalised with serious injuries.

Thames Valley Police first received a report of a van being loaded with cannabis plants in Dover Avenue at around 9pm.   Officers attended and located the van nearby, but it failed to stop when requested.

The police pursued the van but when it reached East Street in Grimsbury it was involved in a collision with a man in his thirties.  He sustained serious injuries and is currently in hospital receiving treatment.

After the collision a 27-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of failing to stop, possession with intent to supply a controlled class B drug and possession with intent to supply a controlled drug of class A.

A second man, aged 28, was also arrested on suspicion of failing to stop, driving a motor vehicle dangerously and possession with intent to supply a controlled drug of class B.

Both men remain in custody.

Thames Valley Police say that a mandatory referral of what happened has been made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct.
