What are we voting for on Thursday?

The areas of our lives that will be affected by our decision in the polling booth
We’re just a few days away from voting beginning in this year’s Local Elections. Polling stations will open at 7am on Thursday.
Social media posts and flyers through the door are hoping to persuade us to vote for the various candidates, but for many people its confusing understanding which areas of our lives will be most affected by who wins.
The vote on Thursday will elect councillors at various levels of local government.
Whilst national government will watch the results with interest no one elected at this election will be able to directly affect any national policies. So areas such as the level of income tax, the welfare system, the NHS and immigration are beyond the remit of those elected on Thursday.
In Oxfordshire we will be voting for county councillors. They oversee areas such as education and schools, social care, roads, public transport and libraries.
In two Banbury wards and Deddington voters will also be asked to elect Cherwell district councillors. They will be able to influence areas such as planning and housing, rubbish collections, leisure facilities and how our area develops.
In West Northamptonhsire one unitary authority does the work of both Oxfordshire County and Cherwell District Council, giving councillors influence over all the areas that are split across two councils in Oxfordshire.
In a few places town and parish elections are also taking place. People elected here have a say in areas such as play areas, allotments, cemeteries, and community initiatives and events.
