MP adds his voice to concerns over the future of the JDE Honours Board

Sean Woodcock says they are of great sentimental value and an important part of local history

Banbury’s MP has joined calls for the JDE Honours Board Plaques to be saved if a final decision to close the coffee factory site on Ruscote Avenue goes ahead.

The plaques were awarded to staff who had given thirty years’ service to the company.   Around 600 of them have been displayed on the wall at the top of the stairs behind the JDE Banbury reception.

Earlier this week we told you that a campaign had been launched by Jo Mobley – who’s father worked at the site – to make sure the plaques were saved.

Sean Woodcock has now written to JDE.

In his letter he said: “Several constituents have written to me in recent days to raise their concerns that should the closure of JDE in Banbury go ahead, the future of JDE Honours Board Plaques that were awarded to themselves, or family members is not clear.

“These plaques were awarded for 30 years continuous service and understandably have great sentimental value to former employees and their family members. I understand that there over 600 plaques, owing to the factory’s important place as a prominent local employer for many years.

“I am writing today to ask that the wishes of former staff and family members be considered in any decision over the future of these plaques. They are an important part of local history, and I know many former staff members and their families would very much appreciate the opportunity to retain them.”

Banbury FM understands from JDE that alongside the consultation with staff, which is due to begin next week, they plan to look at a number of heritage items at the site, to consider what might happen to them should their proposal move ahead.
