Joe Everatt wanted to raise money for a cancer unit at the Churchill Hospital
A Consultant Anaesthetist at the Horton General Hospital has completed an epic Lands End to John O’Groats Bike Ride to raise money for the cancer unit which treated him.
Joe Everatt cycling over 1,000 miles to raise £2,110 for Lower Gastrointestinal Cancer Services at the Churchill Hospital in Oxford.
His decision to take on this challenge was made at short notice, leaving him with very little time for preparation with a training schedule which he described as “marginal to non-existent”.
Joe hoped to complete the challenge in 11 days, but by the fourth day he realised that was ambitious – especially as he was carrying full camping gear. In the end he finished after 15 days.
Describing the ride Joe said: “The hardest bits were Devon and Cornwall, they were so hilly, and Wales – even more hilly, plus torrential rain! And the best bits were Scotland with empty roads, surprisingly few hills, and of course being much fitter by that time!
“I met lots of interesting people along the way, quite a few on the same route as me.
“Thanks to everyone who supported me, I was very touched!”
Claire Hughes, Events Officer from Oxford Hospitals Charity, said, “Congratulations to Joe on this achievement. Cycling over 1,000 miles and raising £2,110 for the [Lower Gastrointestinal Cancer Services] Unit is amazing.”
