A Banbury man has been jailed for six years after carrying out a robbery and an attempted robbery at the same shop in the town.

On May 2 at around 7.30am, Lucas Smith, who’s 28 and of Cope Road, entered the Quick Stop Shop on Warwick Road.   He demanded all the rolling tobacco – worth around £1,000 – while showing the female shop assistant a knife tucked into his waistband.   The victim, in her twenties, was not injured.

Eight days later, on May 10, Smith returned to the shop wearing a balaclava and blue surgical gloves.   Again he demanded tobacco and money, but this time showed what he said was the handle of a handgun.    The male shop assistant, in his fifties, grabbed a piece of metal shelving and chased Smith out.

At Oxford Crown Court on June 13 Smith admitted one count of robbery and one count of attempted robbery.    He returned to court on Thursday (July 10) where he was given four years for the robbery and two years for the attempted robbery.   These will run consecutively.

Detective Constable Sophie Smith, based at Banbury police station, said: “I am extremely pleased with this result and that Lucas Smith will now serve a prison sentence as a result of his actions.

“I would like to praise both victims for coming forward and supporting this investigation, they were both a credit to themselves and helped us to bring Smith to justice.

“I would also like to thank the local community and Quick Stop for their support in providing information and evidence which has proved vital.”
