“speaking with refugees was truly eye-opening, and has left a lasting impression”
Banbury’s MP Sean Woodcock was in Jordan last week as part of a Parliamentary delegation, meeting key Jordanian leaders for high level discussions.
Whilst there he visited refugee camps to witness first-hand the impact of humanitarian efforts in the country.
Over 500,000 Syrian refugees are currently in Jordan, and over 65,000 of those reside at the Za’atari Refugee Camp. Here Mr Woodcock spoke with representatives from the UNHCR (the UN Refugee Agency) and UNICEF. They provide people who live in the camps with essentials such as food and water.
Mr Woodcock met some of the refugees at a refugee registration centre, then went to the Za’atari Refugee Camp where he saw a programme which provides children with access to education whilst living at the camp.
During a visit to the Jabal el-Hussein refugee camp Mr Woodcock gained a broader perspective on the challenges faced by different refugee communities in Jordan, and how humanitarian efforts are making an impact.
Following the visit he said: “Seeing the work of agencies like UNHCR, UNICEF and [United Nations Relief and Works Agency] on the ground, and speaking with refugees was truly eye-opening, and has left a lasting impression.
“I also took part in thoughtful discussions with Jordanian officials, alongside colleagues. I am grateful for their time in speaking with us, and they left us with food for thought as we returned to the UK.
“I am hopeful that I will be able to use this experience to further my Parliamentary work, and provide deeper insights when answering queries from constituents, particularly on matters relating to foreign affairs.”
