The Branch had been active in the village for 95 years
At a poignant and emotional event on Sunday the last chapter in the life of the Bodicote Branch of the Royal British Legion was brought to a close.
The Laying Up of the Branch’s Standard was the final act for branch members, entrusting the Standard to the safe keeping of St John the Baptist Church.
The Bodicote Branch was formed in 1930. Over a number of recent months extensive efforts have been made to keep it operating, but the decision was finally taken that the Branch couldn’t be sustained.
Yesterday’s event was attended by Banbury Town Mayor (Councillor Kieron Mallon), the Chair of the Cherwell District Council (Councillor Dorothy Walker) and Chair of Bodicote Parish Council (Councillor Joyce Washburn). The Laying Up ceremony also had representation from the wider Royal British Legion with County and Banbury Standards present, the RAF Association, Banbury RAF Air Training Corps 1460 Sqn and Bodicote Youth Groups, including the Bodicote Scouts.
Wg Cdr Graham Wyeth oversaw yesterday’s event. He said: “It was a sad day but an important moment of reflection and remembrance of the 95 years of selfless dedication and service of those members of the Bodicote Branch of the RBL who has served their nation, the village and community so extraordinarily well.”
