Parking has been a source of frustration and safety concerns
A scheme to address congestion outside a Banbury primary school at the start and end of the day could soon be trialled.
Parking by parents close to Harriers Banbury Academy has been a source of frustration and safety concerns for motorists and those living locally.
As the new school year gets underway Oxfordshire County Council is consulting on implementing a “school street” trial on Harrier’s View.
This would see the road closed to most traffic between 8.15am and 9.15am and again from 2.30pm to 4pm on school days. The aim is to cut congestion around the school gates, improve safety for children walking, cycling or scooting, and reduce exposure to air pollution at busy times.
If approved, the restrictions would be enforced using automatic number plate recognition cameras, with non-exempt vehicles entering during the closure times receiving a penalty charge notice.
Residents living within the affected area would be exempt from the rules, as would emergency and certain service vehicles.
The proposal follows similar schemes across the country designed to encourage active travel to school and create safer, cleaner environments for pupils and families.
Local people are being encouraged to share their feedback in a consultation before a decision is made on whether the trial should go ahead.
