“the Labour Party has now abandoned its values and me”

A prominent local Labour Councillor and Deputy Leader of the Labour Group at Cherwell District Council has quit the party and joined the Conservatives.

Dr Chukwudi Okeke says he feels Labour has lost its focus and abandoned its values.   He was elected to Cherwell in May 2022, representing Banbury Cross & Neithrop and took the role of Chairman of the Council for twelve months last year.

He has been a member of the Labour Party for over a decade.

In a statement released by the Conservatives, Dr Okeke said: “I feel that Labour has lost its focus in building a healthy and inclusive society, a society where everyone, irrespective of their background can thrive and be valued.

“I got into politics to serve the community and make a difference to peoples’ lives, but the Labour Party has now abandoned its values and me.

“I consider the aims and objectives represented in the Conservative Party as credible, inclusive and progressive irrespective of one’s background. I have therefore decided to join the Conservative Party with immediate effect.”

Conservative Group leader Eddie Reeves welcomed Dr Okeke.   He said: “I think Chuk’s been impressed by our practical approach to opposition on Cherwell District Council…

“Sound finances, common sense policies and a welcome approach to all sections of the community is what we’re about locally.   Chuk sees that, and I couldn’t be happier that someone of his calibre has decided to join us.”

The move by Dr Okeke means the Conservatives, in partnership with an Independent Councillor, have taken over from Labour as the official opposition at Cherwell District Council.

Dr Okeke also serves on Banbury Town Council where he is the Deputy Town Mayor and represents Neithrop South.
