Modern efficient lighting installed at Banbury landmarks

The colour can be changed to show support for national days and campaigns

Two of Banbury’s most iconic landmarks – Banbury Cross and the statue of the ‘Fine Lady on a White Horse’ – now have brand-new LED lighting systems to show them off at their best after dark.

The lights on both landmarks are brighter and more energy efficient, replacing older, weaker fixtures.   Energy consumption at both sites will be considerably reduced.

The renovation project was led by Banbury Town Council, working with Cherwell District Council, who provided a grant from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.

A feature of the new system is the ability to change the colours of the LED lights, allowing them to be programmed for national days, in the same way Banbury Town Hall is often illuminated. In honour of UN International Day of Older People both monuments will be lit up in purple, then in red for Remembrance Sunday and blue for Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Day.

Its hoped the new lighting will raise the profile and prominence of both landmarks, and comes just in time for the darker autumnal evenings.

Shaida Hussain, Leader of Banbury Town Council and Chair of the Resources Committee, said: ‘‘We are very pleased to be modernising the Banbury Cross and the Fine Lady statue with the latest lighting technology, offering brighter lights and significantly reducing overall energy consumption.

“These new systems will not only add to their visual splendour as the sun sets, but also allow them to be utilised to commemorate national days and special events throughout the year.

“We at Banbury Town Council would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Cherwell District Council for their financial support on this project.”
