Items not suitable for the blue bin can be rehomed using the scheme

A council scheme to rehome good-quality used items has seen 74 tonnes of clothes and household items collected from north Oxfordshire doorsteps and given a second lease of life in just twelve months.

Cherwell District Council launched its partnership with Anglo Doorstep Collections a year ago.

The service makes it easy to pass on items which can’t be recycled in the blue bin, so they are rehomed or reused.   Collected donations are sorted and distributed by Anglo to where they’re needed most — both across the UK and worldwide.

Of everything collected 95 percent of items are re-homed or reused, with only 5 per cent needing to be recycled.   As part of their wider charitable work, Anglo also makes donations to charity, including to Oxfordshire Mind in support of local mental health services.

Councillor Ian Middleton, Portfolio Holder for Neighbourhood Services, said: “Our partnership with Anglo Doorstep Collections has really tapped into our residents’ desire to minimise their impact on the planet when they need to dispose of old, unwanted items.

“Reuse is a great option for items like shoes and clothes, because they’re made of a mix of materials and can be hard for the recycling industry to process. A doorstep collection service removes many of the barriers to the reuse of second-hand items, and the number of people using the Anglo service is increasing all the time.

“Promoting a circular economy is one of the best ways of reducing waste and ensuring the best use of precious resources, as well as helping to tackle the cost of living. At Cherwell, we’re always looking for new ways to encourage our residents to reuse and recycle, and we couldn’t be more pleased with how the first year of our partnership with Anglo has gone.”

Commonly collected items include clothes, shoes, books, small electricals, CDs, DVDs, and children’s toys.
