Glass set to be recycled in blue bins from January

28/10/2025

Existing bottle banks would be removed once the new system is up and running

Those of us who live in the Cherwell District will soon be able to put glass into our blue recycling bins, if Cherwell District Council’s Executive agree to a recommendation when they meet next week.

Currently glass must be taken to one of over 100 bottle banks in the district.   Its believed around 70 percent of household glass is taken to one of these sites.

A national waste strategy was launched in December 2018.   As part of this “Simpler Recycling” requires councils like Cherwell to collect paper, cardboard, plastics, steel, aluminium cans, and glass at the kerbside.

Councillors are recommended to agree to allowing glass in the blue recycling bin from January next year – the lowest cost option to be compliant with the new rules.   The option of each household having a separate glass recycling bin would cost £941,800.

The contents collected in the blue recycling bins will be separated at a Materials Recovery Facility by machines.  The council pays a fee for the amount of recycling it takes to the facility, although this is more expensive than the current arrangement using bottle banks.

Whilst the law requires the change it is only expected to increase the amount of glass recycled by between 1 and 1.5 percent – around 500 to 700 tonnes per year.

The existing glass recycling banks will be removed over a period of time as the new system comes into force.
