Claudia brings flood warning as sewage dumped into local rivers and canals
14/11/2025

Two-thirds of local sewage treatment works were pumping sewage into our waterways at 2pm
Storm Claudia has brought heavy rain to our area with a warning of flooding from rivers, full of sewage from local treatment works.
The rain started falling late on Thursday with the Met Office issuing an amber alert advising of the level of rainfall expected. This is in force until midnight.
The volume of water has already exceeded what many of our local sewage treatment works can cope with.
At 2pm on Friday two-thirds were pumping raw sewage into our local rivers – 20 out of 30.
In Bloxham, where Thames Water completed an upgrade costing over £6million to provide a major increase in treatment capacity, sewage has been pumping out into the Bloxham Brook since 1.45am.
Raw sewage has also today been pumped into Boddington Canal, Byfield Brook, River Cherwell, the Farthinghoe Stream, Hanwell Brook and Sor Brook.
Meanwhile, a flood alert has been issued by the Environment Agency for the Sor Brook and Bloxham Brook from Horley and Bloxham to Adderbury.
The warning is that rising river levels from persistent rain may lead to flooding of low lying land and roads, especially in the Bloxham and Bodicote areas.
The advice is to take care and avoid walking, cycling or driving through flood water.
