New booking system now operating at Alkerton Household Waste Recycling Centre

Oxfordshire residents should take along proof of address to avoid being charged

A new booking system is now in force at the Alkerton Household Waste Recycling Centre, along with the other centres operated by Oxfordshire County Council.

Those with waste to dispose of can no longer just turn up, but instead have to book a slot on the council’s website.   Bookings are available up to two weeks in advance or with as little as 30 minutes notice before a visit – subject to availability.

The council says the new system will reduce queuing, provide for better traffic management and increase recycling rates as staff can help visitors separate their recyclable from their non-recyclable items.

It will also serve to prevent trade waste from being illegally disposed of at the centres.

Councillor Judy Roberts, Oxfordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Place, Environment and Climate Action, said: “We know our residents are committed to reducing waste as they have helped Oxfordshire top the national recycling, reusing and composting table for 11 consecutive years.

“We believe they will see the benefits of this new system, which will help them avoid long queues by booking a time slot in advance, and help lead to better customer service from our HWRC employees.”

Some people have expressed concerns that the booking system could cause fly-tipping to increase, but the county council points to an independent study carried out in 2021 which showed no evidence this was the case.

Whilst the new booking system is online, people without internet access can book by telephone on 01865 519800.

For those living outside the county a fee of £15 will be charged per visit.  Oxfordshire residents should take with them a document showing proof of address to avoid being charged.
