Town councillors call for rethink of museum funding withdrawal

Councillor Hussain: “Banbury Museum is part of the town’s identity”
Banbury Town Council has formally voted to oppose a proposal by Cherwell District Council to withdraw core funding for Banbury Museum from April next year.
The decision came at a full council meeting earlier this week when councillors backed a motion calling for the plans to be reconsidered.
The museum relies heavily on a financial contribution from Cherwell to operate. Councillors warned that removing this support could jeopardise the museum’s long term future and potentially lead to its closure.
The motion noted the museum as a “key cultural and educational asset for the town” and urged Cherwell District Council to explore alternative or mitigating options before making any final decision.
Labour group leader, Councillor Shaida Hussain, said “Banbury Museum is part of the town’s identity, and losing it would be a huge blow to our community.
“We’re calling on Cherwell to think again and work with us to find a better way forward.”
