All children can make use of it, but the focus is on females

Work has begun on a new play area at Banbury’s Princess Diana Park, designed to create a welcoming space for girls and young women.

The project is being led by Banbury Town Council in partnership with Cherwell District Council and follows research into how parks can better reflect the needs of girls aged 10 to 18.

The development will include play equipment alongside creative, social and rest spaces aimed at encouraging interaction and activity.

Inspired by the Make Space for Girls charity, the area will be accessible to all children while focusing on features girls say make parks more enjoyable.   It will include creative design walls and social seating, along with a wind-up DJ post.   This will utilise a wind-up mechanism to provide power for a speaker which users can connect to on their phone.

Councillor Mark Cherry said: “This play area has been built to carefully curated specifications to ensure that it can be used by children of all ages, but with its special focus on girls and young women, it is set apart from other park facilities and is sure to prove a hugely popular addition to Princess Diana Park.”
