Hennef and Banbury were twinned back in 1981
The 45-year friendship between Banbury and its twin town of Hennef in Germany has been renewed.
Six members of Banbury and District Twinning Association have just returned from several days in Hennef, where the town’s carnival event was taking place. Two members of Banbury Town Council also attended.
During the visit a new Banbury and Hennef Friendship Agreement was signed by the Mayor of Hennef, Mario Dahm, and Shaida Hussain – the Leader of Banbury Town Council. The ceremony was witnessed by members of both town’s twinning associations, and representatives from Hennef’s other twin towns in France and Poland.
Banbury and District Twinning Association Chairman, John Donaldson, said: “It’s been 45 years since [the agreement] was initially signed. We need to regenerate the interest we have in the towns between Banbury and Hennef and that has been achieved by the signing of this agreement.
“We look forward to increasing numbers in our Twinning Association and doing lots more things in the community and raising the profile and the awareness.
“It’s been a win-win situation for the town and the Twinning Association and we look forward to developing that more in the future.”
During the visit the party from Banbury enjoyed the local tradition of a costume party, explored the history of nearby Bonn and enjoyed the Hennef Carnival parade.
