Plan to bring free parking to Banbury…

…but its only once a year on Remembrance Sunday

Free car parking is coming to Banbury Town Centre – once a year on Remembrance Sunday.

Cherwell District Council’s Executive looks set to approve a proposal to provide free car parking in both Banbury and Bicester in Council owned and managed car parks to support those attending Remembrance Sunday events.

Kidlington in the south of the district is unaffected as parking there is already free at all times due to a covenant on the land.   In Bicester two hours free car parking is available in Pioneer Square each day, but there is no free parking provision in Banbury.

A report to the Executive notes that in Banbury the move specifically excludes Castle Quay car parks as, whilst they are owned by the Council, they are managed and run separately.

The one day change to offer free Remembrance Sunday parking would cost the council between £4.5k and £5k.

The move follows a motion by Conservative Councillor Donna Ford to support serving personnel, veterans, bereaved families, and others heading to Remembrance Sunday events, who may have found the parking fee a barrier to attending.
