Canoe Club hoping for help in achieving matched-funding award

The cash will be used to purchase new boats for up-and-coming teenage and young adult paddlers

Banbury and District Canoe Club has secured a £5,150 grant from Sport England towards two lightweight racing boats – but to get the cash they have to raise another £5,150 themselves.

The group, which is based at Cropredy wharf, is hoping local businesses will support them in achieving their target.   They also have an Open Day planned for May 4 where visitors will be able to try kayaking and canoeing and enjoy a barbecue and bake sale.

The new boats will support up-and-coming teenage and young adult paddlers, as the club’s current fleet lacks suitable lightweight equipment for developing young athletes.

Banbury and District Canoe Club prides itself on providing equipment for as many paddlers as possible so that everyone, regardless of background, can enjoy the sport.

Club members compete at regional, national and international level, with both past and current paddlers having represented Great Britain.

Club Chair, Kirsten Suenson-Taylor, said: “We’re incredibly grateful to Sport England for their support. This funding opportunity is a huge boost for our young paddlers, but we need the local community’s help to unlock it. These boats will make a real difference to our teenagers as they train and compete, supporting the next generation of athletes coming through the club.”

Anyone wishing to make a donation can do so on the club’s Crowdfunder page.
