Minister visits Banbury project supporting young people at risk of homelessness

The visit follows the announcement of a new £37 million Ending Homelessness in Communities fund

Banbury’s MP Sean Woodcock and local Labour Cherwell District Councillors welcomed the government’s Minister for Local Government and Homelessness to our area yesterday.

Alison McGovern visited the Banbury Young Homelessness Project.

They offer support, advice and guidance to young people aged 13 to 25, and their families, facing known root causes of youth homelessness such as relationship breakdowns, not being in education, employment or training, or having mental health or therapeutic needs.

Last week the government announced a new £37 million Ending Homelessness in Communities Fund to supercharge the work of voluntary, faith and community groups such as the Banbury Young Homelessness Project.

Mrs McGovern said: “It’s brilliant to hear from the Banbury Young Homelessness Project about their dedicated support for young people at risk of homelessness. Across the country, teams such as BYHP work hard to ensure young people get the stability and hope they need to build a better future.

“Our National Plan to End Homelessness is backed by £3.6 billion and includes 3 pledges to be achieved by the end of this Parliament. We will halve long-term rough sleeping, end the unlawful use of B&Bs for families, and prevent more households from becoming homeless in the first place.”

Mr Woodcock added: “It was great to visit the Banbury Young Homelessness Project, alongside Alison McGovern MP.   The work they do supporting young people and their families in Banbury and the local area is invaluable, and I am grateful for all their hard work.

“I am pleased that the new National Plan to End Homelessness will help councils intervene early to prevent families and young people from having to face homelessness.   I will continue to work on legislation to end homelessness in our area through my work on the Housing and Local Government Select Committee. Everyone deserves a safe, and decent place to call home.”
